Histology pattern recognition could be used to identify and measure the area of necrotic core, foam cells and heart tissue versus media in rodent preclinical cardiovascular samples.

Histology pattern recognition across heart tissue. The results are good across most of the tissue. but the upper left region was problematic. This example illustrates both the importance of pathologist review (we can quickly exclude regions where the computer struggles) and also shows that pathologists will have jobs for a long time into the future !

Although histology pattern recognition represents a powerful tool for segregating target tissue components, it is made even more powerful when it is used in conjunction with the positive inclusion and negative exclusion pen tools. Use of these tools allow the correction of minor focal errors in tissue trimming and nonspecific staining, and thus enable more accurate analyses.
